Hwilas
The Cornish Heroines Project
Hwilas, a Cornish word meaning to seek, search for or to try, is the name of a group set up mainly to perform newly written songs about Cornish heroines past and present. Some of the songs are in Sowsnek [English] and some in Kernewek.
The stories of Mary Bryant, Thomasine Bonaventure, Mary Kelynack and Dolli Penntreth have had little exposure in recent times and what there has been is often erroneous. Trevor’s songs endeavour to throw new light on these amazing Cornish women. Research is ongoing and there will be songs of more illustrious and 'unsung' Cornish heroines very soon.
In the group at present are Claire Fielding, vocals, fiddle and recorders; Jacki Lawrence percussion and drones and Trevor Lawrence, vocals, cuatro, mandola, and recorders. Recent performances have been for the Saltash Music Festival and for ‘Brunel 150’ the celebration of the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel and for the new 'Saltfest' arts festival in Saltash.
Upcoming performances will be at Lowender Peran on Saturday 16th October in Perranporth.
